  • staying hungry

I am losing focus a bit. I am not waking up with the urge to learn! I don’t have the urge to work as hard as I can to learn more, do more.

    Adjustment time!

Yes, I will have to adjust. I will have to get that “hungry” feeling back. I need to.

    I don’t have a choice.

I think the reason for that is that I don’t have any hot potatoes. I don’t have any urgency to learn something. I should. There are always things I can learn. I need to be less discouraged. More hungry.

    Hungry! Hungry!

    Eat. Eat. Eat!

  • masterpiece!

Is every day my masterpiece? I wish so! But I need to make it so!

It’s not going to be easy.

    Yes, I know.

But to live to my fullest potential, I need to start making it that way. I need to start thinking that way!

    But how?

Good question. I need to set my expectations.

What are the required things to make it so?
    Waking up early
    – sets my day right
    Spend quality time learning
    – that’s how i am who i am
    Compliment/Encourage my wife
    – because that’s what it means to be a good husband
Spend good time with my kids
    – because that’s what good parents do
    Be myself!
    – because everyone else is taken!
    Inspire others!
    – because that’s what I love to do and I can be good at

  • keep it up

I can say today: i made my day today a masterpiece! Yes, say it louder: I MADE MY DAY A MASTERPIECE!

    Cool!

I woke up at 5:30am (15 mins earlier), collected 2 pomos, got some reading on the train, went out to lunch with others, and have been working hard!

    Keep it up!

I would like to start waking up at 5:15am next week. And collect 2 pomos. And keep the bad habit to 2 times.

    Can I do it?

    I sure can!

  • mits first

I am like a on/off switch. But lately, I am not making each day my masterpiece.

    Why not?

I am getting distracted right at the beginning!

After I wake up, I get my coffeee and I sit down to read some news. Bingo! That’s when I get distracted. I get dragged into “wasting” time. I don’t collect my 2 pomos in the morning. I get into the reading mode right at the start.

    I have done thins before.

This is not going to work.

    I either
    have breakfast somewhere else

    Or
Start doing work right at the start, and then after 7, I go into the reading mode. I have a choice to make. I will try tomorrow.

The important part is getting to the MITs first. Both at work and at home.

  • time to

time to write out my goals; time to do the things I feel resistance to; time to adjust!

  • focus

Finally a productive day! Kind of late, but still. Late is better than never! Hopefully I can finish what I need to do. Hopefully. And that’s not too good.

Having a goal, and working towards it, and focusing on it, really helps. It helps me get things done! I need to keep doing that.

I still have some adjusting to do at home. I am not collecting tomatos the way I need.

Focus. focus. focus. That’s what I need more of. I keep getting distracted. I cannot alllow that.

  • getting it done

Still struggling to get going. Still struggling to get the max out of my day. As a result, I’m not getting things done.

I need a sense of urgency. I need it back.

Today was a busy day for me. But I’m focusing on other things. Granted, they’re important. But they’re not the most important things I need to work on.

But when I think about, it’s actually a good sign. I am concentrating on work, and that’s a great thing. Results will follow.

There are a few other things I need to focus on to get the most out of the day.
    – write my goals
    – focus on mits first

    will get there

  • I should be in the TDD camp!

I am a TDD fan. But not a TDD practitioner. Uncle Bob convinced me to try again.

I have said it many times, Robert Marting, Uncle Bob, is someone who has had the biggest influence on my career (you can find other references on this site). I usually buy all his books. His latest one, The Clean Coder, is not only a joy to read, it’s filled with great advice. It’s like reading The Pragmatic Programmers again. Who doesn’t want that?

    Why?

Because I could be writing higher quality code. Faster. Less buggy. And I will get more fun out of it.

    I’ve tried before.

And reverted to old ways of doing it.

This time, I want to infect myself with it.

How? By trying harder. By actually writing the tests first.

Today I got an opportunity to do just that. And I am surprised how I was able to kill a few bugs. Bugs that would have “bugged” me later.

But why write the tests first?

So I develop good coverage. So I design better. So I get instant feedback. These are 3 very good reasons.

Do I really need more support?

Just so we’re looking at the same thing, here are three laws of TDD as per Bob.

    The Three Laws of TDD
    1) You are not allowed to write any production code until you have first written a failing unit test.
    2) You are not allowed to write more of a unit test than is sufficient to fail—and not compiling is failing.
    3) You are not allowed to write more production code that is sufficient to pass the currently failing unit test.

  • getting things done

This will stop. Focusing on MITs and getting things done will start NOW!

    1. I will write daily goals before i go to sleep/or first things in the morning.
    2. I will focus on dev work at work and do the things that are uncomfortable.

    Stop kidding around.

  • getting back on track

I need to get on track. I need to start waking up on time. For now, it’s down by 11; up by 6. Seems it’s the best I can do for now. But I will have to really start cranking it up after the summer. Soon. I have a ton of work I need to complete.
