  • improving learning

Am I learning? What am I learning? I am learning all that I can? I think I am, but I think I’m not learning properly.

Take design patterns, for instance. I’ve learned them a long time ago. Or, I should say, I’ve been learning them for some time ago. I still don’t really know all of them. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I have not accumulated enough chunks.

So it’s very fitting that I am going back to basics. Basics in terms of learning how to learn. I think it’s very important to do it. In the future, I can show it to my kids when they’re in high school or even college.

  • not improving

We played a tough team on Saturday. We got out played pretty bad. Out positioned, out maneuvered.

Did we learn anything? It’s hard to say. I think we learned that we have to play hard, we have to hustle more, we have to communicate more.

I’m not happy with our trainer. He does not come prepared. His practice plans almost don’t exist. He does not follow what the director tells him. It’s just pretty bad. Are we trying new things? Is there innovation in our practices? I can’t see it.

Not super happy with our coach as well. He’s making decisions for the trainer too much. He’s there when he really shouldn’t be.

Well, I’ve got some coach learning to do as well. I pushed for a hard training session on Fri. It almost looked like we came tired on Sat. Possible, but not likely. We hustled really hard at practice, but one practice does not make you so much better.

  • goals

I am struggling a little to push myself. I am getting better, a little, with waking up earlier and earlier, but not totally the way I want it. I guess it’s a work in progress. I will continue trying. Writing it out the day before as goal definitely helps.

With learning. It’s fun to learn new things, but I feel resistance to learn new stuff. I guess that’s good. I do wait till almost last minute to start. If I had started earlier, I would have probably thought of some new material to present. But hey.

Review time is today. I have them scheduled one after another. 4 in a row. I’ve got a group of guys that I want to grow. I want to do something else with them. Like an outing. A horse racing or something. Or great adventure. I think that would be fun. I should ask around and organize something.

  • learning to stick

I am not a big fan of Halloween, but kids have fun. My son dressed up as an old grandma and was a big hit. Surprisingly, he really liked being dressed up like that.

Is there something wrong dressing up like one? I don’t know. I don’t think so.

My patterns learning is coming slow. I have to prepare for my presentation on Monday. After a few weeks when I put it away, I tend to forget a lot of details. I think that’s why it’s not “sticking.” As my course on how to learn better is teaching me, it’s best to space out the learning. It’s best to let it sink in and develop into a pattern inside the brain.

Well, let’s see if that will work.

  • playing jokes

Sometimes kids play jokes on me. Intentionally or not. Like my son playing on my phone and lowering the sound to the level where I could not hear the alarm. It’s life. It happens. I can’t blame them.

I’m wondering if I’m being too passive with them. Am I letting things slip up? LIke playing soccer or asking them to do more math homework. I don’t know yet, but I have to be on top of things. If they want to watch for 30 mins, then we need to do it all.

  • having direction

When I don’t go to sleep early enough and wake up tired, it’s so hard to sit on the steps or just head down. So hard. But if I don’t, I waste time. Sometimes a lot. I have to be disciplined enough to do both. If I’m tired, head down but go to sleep earlier so I recover. That’s really the only solution to this. But after I’m writing the goal, it’s helping.

Learning to learn is a great course to undertake. It will help me discover more about my brain, which I can then pass to my kids and others I teach.

I do believe I have a knack for coaching. I love spending time with kids. I like showing them what they can improve on. They need direction, everybody does.

  • being motivated

That’s the motivation I need! After I write out the goals before I go to sleep, I am much more motivated to actually do them in the morning. It worked for me today. It has worked for me in the past. Then why don’t I do it every night?

    Why don’t I?

I will! It really only takes a minute, two at most. I then shut off the computer and head to sleep or upstairs.

I have a new goal in mind: learning how to learn better. That will help me become a better idea generator and a better innovator and a better… whatever I want!

  • back to shape

I’ve been down, but not out. I’ve been lazy but not for lack of trying. I’ve been trying to get back to shape and I keep fighting.

It’s not easy. But if it was, would that be a road less or more traveled?

It’s hard and not a lot of people are doing it. But I don’t have to be one of them. Slowly I am becoming one of them. I am not trying as hard as I was. I keep reading politics for no real benefit, only to be disappointed more often than not.

What am I changing and how?

For starters, there is really no reason not to spend a minute or two, even if I”m tired, on writing goals before I go to sleep.

I did it yesterday. My goals are actually out of line and I am not sure what I should be learning.

    Enough said.

  • fighting battles

I am fighting a losing battle the last few weeks. I can’t seem to get my weight under control, it’s hovering around 190 rather the 185 that I’m after. I’ve been somewhat strict in what I eat to no avail. Next step is a morning or evening run around the block. I think that should help and will make me feel better. If that doesn’t help, then gym is probably the only resort.

I am also fighting a game where I don’t collect a pomo because I’m tired or what have you. I need to head straight down, whether I’m tired or not. If I am tired, then I will need to head to bed earlier. As simple as that.

  • more practice

I am making progress. I am waking up earlier more consistently. I am able to collect a pomo and even write more often. That’s progress. I am also staying more disciplined and read on the train, and at work. That’s a lot of learning. I want to do more of doing. I need to figure out ways to do that. I need to start experimenting more. I have been doing reading, but not enough doing. Well, that’s something I discovered today that I want to take action on.

I should identify what I want to learn and then take stabs at doing it. That’s really the only way to learn a given tool or technique.

There are a few things that come to mind. Kotlin, docker and micro services. Those are the things I want to learn in the near future. So far, only docker is really a tool that I can play with. Micro service is something that requires a bit more work.

I need to identify things /  problems / concepts I want to try and then do it! More practice, more experimentation.
