  • doing work at work

Quite easy to get distracted at work. I cannot allow that to happen. My focus at work is to do work and work related stuff. A tomato or two is not going to hurt. But that’s about it. Nothing else. No watching home-improvement videos. Not shopping online.

    That will stop.

    Tomorrow.

I will get 1 or 2 tomatos. I will focus on work after that. Period. Nothing else.

    Got it?

    I though so!

  • Good book-review format

This review is about Apache Maven 3 Cookbook from Srirangan from Packt Publishing.
    Facts

    9 chapters, 208 pages, $35.99
This book covers Apache Maven 3

    Pros

Each recipe is structured in 3 steps:

    “Getting ready”
    “How to do it”
“See also” for references on associated recipes

    Cons

The scope of the book is too large for only 200 pages. It spans from Java to Scala and Groovy through Android, GWT and Flex.
Most products installation processes (Sonatype Nexus, Hudson) are documented with a few screenshots. It would have been better to reference the product installation on the Web or to go in detail. In the current state of thing, most readers are left wondering what to do with it.
The recipe structure is well adapted for… recipes. When talking about general Maven principles like compiling a project, it feels convoluted and artificial.
Writing a whole chapter about native Maven reporting when there’s Sonar? Come on…

    Conclusion

I was expecting much from this book, because I’m a daily Maven user and because Maven is regularly misused (see here and here for a start). I’m sorry to say I’m disappointed: there’s not much regarding how to resolve daily Maven problems provided. The concept is a good idea but IMHO the result is a failure.

  • doing things!

I’m doing a few things right. Right after I wake up, which I have been doing fairly consistently at 5, I go down to take a shower. I need to do that, otherwise I get easily distracted. Because of church, I also try to keep my bad habits under control. I love that. It’s tempting, but I do it. I should be proud for that!

  • goals

Open for extension. Closed for modification.

It’s the best design principle out there. Period. I have used it countless times. Every time, it produces a very impressive solution.

But I have to take the effort to implement things the right way.

I love doing things the right way. If only more people did that, things would be much more easier to work with. But on the other hand, it’s easier to come up with elegant solution to bad state of things. But I’d rather have it the other way around.

  • insulation

I am doing a lot of house work. I spend a lot of money doing it. Is it worth it? I hope it will be. Eventually. But even now, you pay for luxury. Is it? It hink so. The freedom; better schools; better social status. I think positives are there.

    But it is expensive!

My latest project? Insulation! For around $600 (with truck rental charge), I put 18 bags of Atticat insulation into my attic. It’s a loose fiberglass insulation. Fairly easy process once I had everything ready. My wife helped me.

Will it work? Don’t know yet. Victor’s rooms seems to be warmer now. Will know more when it is cold outside!

  • goals

what’s up with me? I can’t find 5 minutes to write every day? I can’t collect 2 pomos every day?

    I’m sliding.

And I don’t want that to happen. NEVER. EVER.

At around 4:50, I should just write! Write for 5 or 7 minutes. If I have not done something, then I should not rush to get it done quickly at 4:50.

When I wake up, I still don’t have the best system to get into “learning” state. I get distracted. By TV. By being tired. By… NOT ACCEPTABLE! Really!

Starting from tomorrow, I will head straight down to basement to take a shower. No excuses. I know that I need at least 7 hours of sleep. If I get less, then I should setup an alarm an hour alter.

This system is still being worked on. I will improve it. And I will improve as a result.

  • refi

I made a big decision today. I decided not to refinance with Jersey Mortgage! I am sure driving Rick mad. But on the other hand, I don’t really want to pay $3K to get $100 off. Either way, I think I did the right thing. I am making decisions on my own. I am doing what I think is best for me.

  • what do i want?

I seem to be oriented towards me. Me. Me. Me. Me. A lot. Is that a good thing or bad?

    Not sure.

Bad sometimes. But it depends on how you look at it.

That’s me, though. That’s what I do a lot. That’s how I look at things. And no matter how much I fight it, I think things will be that way. Until I change them.

Do I want to? I don’t know. I am trying to be more social.

  • stay ahead!

I have to stay agressive. There is really no other way for me. I have to make each day my masterpiece. There is no other way for me. I have to stay ahead of the game. I can’t allow to slip!

  • hungry

I’m starting to make some progress in making each day my masterpiece. I do need to start living every day like it’s my last. I’m not doing that. But at least I’m thinking about it. That’s progress. I finally have a good environement where I can be agressive in learning and doing the things I need to be… getting better.
