  • no TV — progress

I learned that my wife is not opposed to everything. Yesterday was another day with no TV. And I see a small difference in my sons. They easily tune it off and don’t really ask for it. It’s great. I hope it continues. I really do. It’s for their good. When they don’t watch TV, they can do something else. Even if it’s playing. Even if it’s playing video games a bit. All is better than watching TV. TV makes us lazy.

I am a bit worried about my wife. And hour house. We might have to let go of it. The train situation is getting worse. She is almost paranoid. She hears it all the time and it’s freaking her out a bit. I hope this will be temporary. I hope we outgrow it. It’s going to be hard to finid something comparable. Impossible? Probably not. Let’s wait and see.

  • no tv during school week

For the right cause, it’s good to be presistent. My wife had been cold to my idea of no tv during the week. I’ve been saying that all along, after reading that suggestion in the book. No avail. Finally, yesterday, after we were doing homework with Fabian and Victor was watching TV, something clicked in my wife’s mind. I said, no TV during the week, and TV on the weekend only if the kids are good. And she agreed. She turned it off. She said no tv during the week. I will hold her accountable. The little one can still watch it a bit during the day, when Fabian is in school. I just don’t want them to watch it during school week.

I raise my voice. I scream, sometimes. I get really angry. At my kid! For what?! For not picking up things I’m explaining to him. Really? That has to stop. Would I scream like that on other kids? No. So why am I treating my son worse than others? Good question. Unacceptable, actually.

I noticed that TV is having very bad influence on me. When I wake up and I put the TV on, I waste a lot of time. And when I’m tired and don’t feel like doing anything, then we’re talking spending pretty much the entire time in front of it. And if there is something interesting, then no way I’m getting out and doing what I am waking up for.

Yes, why am I waking up at 5:30am? So I can do some work. So I can spend some time reading books, writing code, reading code. So I can improve.

From now on, no TV before 7:30 am for me. Period. No exceptions. Unless something major happens and I’m aware of it. But that means almost never.

  • sony tv

I finally took the plunge and bough a Sony HDTV! Sony KDL40V5100 that is. It’s 40 inches, has excellent reviews and comes with a network blue ray player. I think this is a great buy for $730. I was looking for a set like this for a few months now. Now I have a great Sony set. At least I will not stay behind. That’s the bottom line. I will try to hook up wireless to it. We’ll see if it works.
