  • java ee 6

I think, finally, things are moving in the right direction. It’s really easy to create a stateless session bean via a single @Stateless, inject it into a servlet via @EJB, and deploy the web application to the Glassfish v3 server. You can be up and running in under a minute. That’s great! I love it.

I will read the Java EE 6 and Glassfish 3 book so I want to make sure I go over the examples and actually make them work. But if it’s hard, then I don’t really want to do it.

I think I have officially entered the job search. I sent out my first resume to a trading company. I am not sure whether I really want to work there, but still, I think it would be nice to get a response. Other than that, I have another request for a resume at Gilt, so I will send it out and see what happens. I think Dov works there.

  • looking

I found an interesting job listing today. It was listed for 140k and it requires some advanced threading and messaging skills. Case in point? I think I’m going to test out the job market. At least this will prepare me for next year. I think next year I’m going to be more aggressive in trying to find a new position, whether it’s here in GE or outside. I am getting bored at work and I have a feeling that I am not learning as much as I’d like to. Time for a switch? It’s only been a year and a half and I’d like to stay for 2 years or so, but if a right opportunity presented itself, I think I’d go for it.

  • 43things

I’ve rediscovered 43things and I think it’s going to be a great help to rediscover myself. I do need some work. I criticize my wife too much. I get easily out of control and start yelling. It’s true that it’s really out of my control and i’m not the instigator, but nevertheles, I need to control my emotions.

I need to respect my wife and I need to make her happy more often. I really have to work on saving my marriage, and improving it!

  • getting right back to work

I think it’s important to start a day on a right note. Once again, when I start browsing, checking out news and etc., it’s really hard to get back to work. I think the next few months are going to be relatively slow here at nbc. I think it’s a good time to start brushing on my skills. Who knows there might be more layoffs. Who knows, maybe a great opportunity arises. No matter what, I always want to be ready. Ready for the next step. Ready for the unexpected.

I am also starting to give 37things another try. I am a goal oriented person. I like to be working on improving my skills. I think it’s a good site for that. I still want to learn new words, improve my communication skills, and become a more active blogger. Way to go!

  • learning and writing

I am learning. That’s great. And because of that, I have stuff to write about. For a while, I was wondering what to write about. I was wondering whether I should write about a particular topic. Of course. I I learned something, then I should write about it! I should not think twice. Really. Blogs are really things I learn about. I am now in the process of simplifying the category listings so I have around 7. I don’t really need more.

But yes, because I learn, I have stuff to write about!

  • investing

Trying to predict stock prices is a touch thing to do. When stocks were down over 50%, I was scared to invest. I did, but just a little. I should have jumped in full force! Then, when stocks moved up over 30%, I started selling and selling some short. But then they went up for another 10-15%! Was it smart? Not sure. I think it might have been better to get on the downside a bit more slowly. But I do believe there will be a correction. Who knows when? I don’t even know whether it will happen.

One thing I observed recently, is that stocks gain momentum. Either on the downside, or the upside. Some people get in when the bull or bear is moving. And that has a way to extend the movement. But eventually, things catch up and stocks move where they should.

  • things to write about

Yes, I always have things to write about. I recently discovered… or I became aware that my blogs should be a medium to output my learnings. I should be writing about things that I learn. Things that I find out. Things that I discover. I want to really be feeding off of these blogs. I had been stagnant because I did not have things to write about. But I learn all the time. I read all the time. There are things I learn every day. These are things I should be writing about.

One thing I don’t want to do is thinking that what I write about does not make sense. Nonsense.  I write for myself. For myself. For myself. Keep writing!

  • wife

My wife and I are having issues from time to time. At times, I think it’s not going to work. We’re very different. She is stubborn and judmental. I am easy going and stoic. She gets out of control very often. I usually don’t. Is is going to work out between us? It’s hard to break it up now. But in the future, if things don’t improve, I think we might have to change how we work together.

I am having a 2nd child. There is reason to change much now. Even after it comes our, I want to raise my children. It’s better that way. Even if I suffer.

  • What Have I Learned Today?

I get an inquiry from a recruiter, but I am not sure that I want to leave NBC just yet. We’ll see. I’d like to stick around till the end of the year at least. Plus, the money they offer at 115 is not enough. We’ll see how this one plays out.

  • What Have I Learned Today?

Still loving it here at NBC. But only when I feel that I contribute. I am creating some advanced caching capabilities on top of the Clickablity platform. Not the easiest thing to complete. And not the easiest platform to work with. But after a few days of digging in, sweating, and thinking creatively, I was able to create a clean solution that works! Nice. A failover cache. Get that! If the cache has an incorrect status, it tries a previous version. Nice. I like that.

The benefit? I think we’re getting a really nice speedup in page load. External values are loaded once every 2 hours.

The drawback? It’s a new solution. I don’t really have the time to test it out. But it’s also because of that that it made this project really interesting. I did accomplish my goal! I released it to stage.
