  • using my time efficiently

I have currently a lot of time on my hand and I’m not utilizing it to the fullest potential. I waste too much time. I spend too much time on things that I should not. I need to develop a system that will motivate me to do the things that I need. I cannot waste that much time. I really can’t.

But what? What should I do? I’m not sure, but somehow I have to force myself to 0 minutes wasted. Only spend time on the things that benefit me. I think that’s the only way to move in situations like this.

Why am I here? What are my goals?

I need to work on them as well. What am I learning. Perhaps not enough. Maybe that’s the problem. I think I’m getting somewhere.

  • learning design patterns

I have recently decided to learn on a deeper level. The way I decided to do it is through synoptical reading, where I read not only one source but several. That way I get different viewpoints, different ways of looking at the same thing. I think that can really help me understand.

My first choice? Reading and documenting GoF Design Patterns. I have already read several books on the subject, but never really “got” it. I know some patterns but not all. So I think it will be big help not only for me but for others trying to digest each pattern, point them to different ways of thinking, and give them simple, real life examples. I think that’s really the only way for me to learn it.

But for that, I need to start writing. I have a hard time doing that. I’m having hard time writing on the train. To the point that I’m thinking of buying a Netbook. It would help me not only read better, but allow me to write a review, blog post and more on the train. I just wish they weighed less than 2 pounds. That would really help me.

In either case, my quest to conquer GoF design patterns is on!

  • setting priorities

I am improving! Step by step, I get more and more focused about doing things that are important to me. I have to continue doing that. I have to start accomplishing things. My goal is to 1) read a chapter a day 2) write some code everyday and 3) read some code everyday. It’s not easy. Especially since I also want to write about it. I want to do that because that’s how I will learn.

After Poland, things have shifted. It’s much harder to concentrate and get back on track. After 2 weeks off, my priorities changed, my timezone changed. But I’m slowly recovering. I have to set the priorities straight and stay motivated.

  • tonight’s meeting

I have another Speak and Lead meeting tonight. Things are not looking good for the club. I think it might be time to fold it. I think a lot is at stake tonight. If we get 2 members, we will most likely continue. If not, I think I’m just going to stop. I can’t really take it anymore. It’s eating up my energy. It’s killing me. I hate this constant struggle. It’s nice and convenient, but I don’t know if doing things that are not up to my standards.

  • focus

I’m still having a hard time focusing on doing work and working on my dev skills. Too many distractions. Too many things that I need to do which are not worth my time. It’s time that I change that. Really. What is my goal at work? Any work? To improve my dev skills. To be ready for my next job. At the same time, of course, doing the best job that I can for the company I work for. I need to cut out the bull shit. Focus. Focus. Read. Write. Read Code. Everyday.

  • getting back

After the decision to go with fwix, there is almost no reason for me to stay here at NBC. I need to move on. There are a few problems, though. The market seems to be getting worse. That’s bad news. Just when I thought it’s getting better, we see more and more bad news. Terrible.

But I do see a few contacts that inquired about my availablity.

The first choice for me now is Media6Degrees. Mainly because I told them that I will get back to them. However, it’s been 2 days since I made this decision and I have not heard from them. The longer this drags on, the less optimistic I am.

But all is not lost. If I don’t get it, which now I think that they will pass on me, I can focus on other opportunities. Plus, I will spend the increased available time on working on improving myself.

3 goals for everyday: read 20+ pages a day; read some code; write some code. Not too bad. I need to work out a solution that will force me to do all 3 every day. No sleep if not accomplished. Doable? I think so.

  • moving on

I am leaning towards inquiring about Media6 availability. I don’t want to stay here for too much longer. I am interested to see what Media6 has to offer. I think I can make that place a better place. And I think I will be successful there. But of course, I have to wait and see what happens.

I will think about it a bit more over the weekend and make a final decision on Monday.

  • decision again

I have to make a decision. Soon. Things have turned out as expected here at NBC. Another 3rd party.  Another step back. They decided to basically kill the project we’ve worked on a few months. It was almost my baby. I created it from scratch, picked the technologies. And now it’s gone! Gone! Gone!

    What a waste!

I can’t stay here at NBC. That’s for sure. I should have taken the offer from Media6 back when it was first offered to me.

I might have another opportunity. The recruiter contacted me again. The position might or might not be open.

Should I take it? Should I go to a place where I initially said no?

There are definitely some good points about Media6.

    Very good dev env.

    Focus on doing things right.

    Small place.

    Good package.

So what am I waiting for?

Really, it’s a good question. I think the only place that’s holding me back is that it feels a little weird. The place is small. But I really cannot find some other bad things about it. I told David that I’d like to think it over some more. I don’t see too many negatives. But we’ll see what happens.

  • vacation

I came back from vacation yesterday. My visit lasted 18 days. Not too bad, I think. Just enough, actually. Of course it’s not easy to set it up that way, so next time, I’ll just do it from Frid to Monday. That’s better, I think. Less invasive.

    How was it?

A little dissapointing, I think. I didn’t see as much as I should. But could I have? Visiting with 2 kids, one 4 yrs old, and 2nd 6 months old is not easy. Going anywhere is a hassle. So I can’t complain.

Overall, I liked it. I feel like it’s going to my 2nd home. I feel relaxed. Things are working as expected. I feel good there.

But it’s my vacation. I should be going to places, exploring. We did some of that. We went on a ride in Krakow. We saw Old Town, Kazimierz and others. We went to Wawel. It  was great to see where the ceremony took place. Very nice visit to Krakow. And not too far.

But we didn’t see Wroclaw. I wanted to see it. My wife didn’t really feel like.

We went to quite a few ceremonies. Christening, twice, and a wedding. My wife went to quite a few others.

Poland is changing. But if I had to make a move now, I would not move. Not yet, at least. Everything seems old to me. People are not that clean. Nice women? I think there are more in NY. In fact, during a stroll in NY today,  I realized that NY is a very pleasant city. It’s weird how I look at things differently after vacation.

I feel  tired today. Sleepy. Not feeling like doing work. Gotta go home and get some rest.

  • samotne wakacje

Jadę do Polski jutro.

To wszystko daje sens życia. Dodaje uroku życia. To jest piękne.

No ale co konkretnego się nauczyłem.

    1. Bedę próbował wprowadzić jeden-rodzic-jeden-język regułę. Ja będę mówił po angielsku a Marta po Polsku. Do Victorka i do Fabianka.

Tylko te trzy rzeczy no i aż!
