  • learning concurrency

I got into JVM issues yesterday. It’s actually trying to see what happened. What caused such a big jump in cpu.

It turns out it’s related to concurrency and threading issues. I read about this a while ago. Guess what? I still don’t really know how to read a thread dump? Does anybody know? Good question.

Lesson learned? Concurrency is one complicated topic. I need to learn, learn it. I need to read and re-read books on the subject. AND I NEED TO DOCUMENT EVERYTHING I LEARN ABOUT CONCURRENCY

  • drinking in moderation

I am learning that me getting drunk on Saturday might be the best thing that happened to me in a while.

I am not planning to stop drinking.

I am planning to drink in moderation. For the rest of my life.

I don’t need alcohol to be happy. I don’t need more to be happier. I need good quality time.

I also learned yesteday that giving 110% is a great goal to have. I shouldn’t be afraid to give a little extra. In fact, I should!

When there is a party coming up, get ready! Prepare some music. Some new drinks. Something new. Something cool. You see, that’s the way I want to think.

  • stepping up

I leanred a big lesson on Saturday. And I hope to take a big learnng from it. I am going to overhaul the way I drink. I am going to drink in moderation from now on. And I hope to never ever get drunk and puke. Period.

    It’s not worth it.

    It messes me up.

Good vs bad is totally in bad’s favor.

I am going to step it up a bit. I will try to move a class higher. Some people might not like it. Some people will like it more. But I will like it the most.

More changes. I don’t want to be holding the drink, the glass, or whatever drinking device in my hand all the time.

  • sharing my knowledge

I learned yesterday that I have to be agressive. I have to push for changes. I have to shape how things work inside of m6d.

    Why?

Because I believe I have the knowledge. I am not the best speaker. Not the best story teller. My memory is weak and I lose what I say when I speak. But I learn. I learn all the time! I keep up the pressure on others. And I believe I have good written skills. I can write. Not only I believe I can write. Many people can. I believe I can write in an engaging, easy to read style. I’ve learned that from many influencers. I’ve learned that from all the years of writing.

I should use my writing skills to my advantage.

I should share the knowledge that I have. Not only for my benefit. But because I want a better place to work and because I want to help others.

  • restraining myself

I learned that I raise my voice on my own son when I explain something to him. I might be expecting too much. It might be unrealistic. But I can’t be satisfied with no effort. That kills me.  I saw a little bit of that yesterday. That raises my adrenaline. That makes me scream.

Would I scream if it wasn’t my son? No. And that’s the reason I have to restrain myself. I don’t want that to happen.

  • no TV — progress

I learned that my wife is not opposed to everything. Yesterday was another day with no TV. And I see a small difference in my sons. They easily tune it off and don’t really ask for it. It’s great. I hope it continues. I really do. It’s for their good. When they don’t watch TV, they can do something else. Even if it’s playing. Even if it’s playing video games a bit. All is better than watching TV. TV makes us lazy.

I am a bit worried about my wife. And hour house. We might have to let go of it. The train situation is getting worse. She is almost paranoid. She hears it all the time and it’s freaking her out a bit. I hope this will be temporary. I hope we outgrow it. It’s going to be hard to finid something comparable. Impossible? Probably not. Let’s wait and see.

  • no tv during school week

For the right cause, it’s good to be presistent. My wife had been cold to my idea of no tv during the week. I’ve been saying that all along, after reading that suggestion in the book. No avail. Finally, yesterday, after we were doing homework with Fabian and Victor was watching TV, something clicked in my wife’s mind. I said, no TV during the week, and TV on the weekend only if the kids are good. And she agreed. She turned it off. She said no tv during the week. I will hold her accountable. The little one can still watch it a bit during the day, when Fabian is in school. I just don’t want them to watch it during school week.

I raise my voice. I scream, sometimes. I get really angry. At my kid! For what?! For not picking up things I’m explaining to him. Really? That has to stop. Would I scream like that on other kids? No. So why am I treating my son worse than others? Good question. Unacceptable, actually.

  • yale

We visited Yale, yesterday. I went to NJIT for my studies. Those 2 are a world apart. It’s almost impossible to get in, but for those that do get in, it’s a great college education. Wow! Everything seemed top-notch. Housing, grounds, cafeteria. It is really something to see. The way the college works and how it is setup. It is really amazing. We only got a glimpse, but that enough to get a feel of what a top notch the school is. I learned a lot. And if my son got into the school, it would be his #1 choice. At least the way it stands now.

  • daily learnings

I learned a big lesson yesterday in logback config. As is the rule of debugging, check the simplest things first. I have been digging for a long period of time, in hopes to try to find something wrong with my configuration. I was buffled why it’s not picking up my config file. Guess what, IT WAS a simple thing. logback.xml was being overwritten by logback.xml. And logback was quiet about it. So frustrating. Lot of time wasted on this effort. But at least I learned something. Now I want to try re-directing to a rolling file.

I learned another lesson. Maybe it wasn’t such a big learning, as I know that, but that’s something I need to change, so I am going to bang it anyway. My wife complaigned that I don’t organize anything, that she has to keep thinking of things to prepare, things to cook, where to go. I have got to find a way to be more proactive, to be more active, to be more involved. That’s one change I have to be more aggressive. In fact, I should make this my life-goal. Though, I’m not sure how to call it.

My daily talks with my son might get boring. But I do enjoy him telling him my expecations. I enjoy challenging him. Knowing Fabian, he needs that. Otherwise, he just slucks off. I want to teach him all the lessons I know. I’ve got to do that. My kids are my life.

  • optimizing things

I enjoy optimizing things, making things run faster. I had some big accomplishments in that area on the adserv side. Now, bidders are having some stability issues. I have been complaining about this for a long time! Granted, it’s not an easy problem to solve. But bidders having issues as a result of more spends in the system, or, which is news to me, having issues as a result of segment growth, that is a problem that needs to be resolved. In either case, I enjoy being part of the game, especially since Tommy is out.
